Truth Tuesdays- For the Sake of His Name
Posted by Randall W. Ross in Teaching, Theology, Truth Tuesdays on July 6, 2010
While I was attending this year’s Ligonier National Conference, I received a complementary copy of R.C. Sproul’s commentary on Romans. I wasn’t expecting this gift, but there it was. Strangely, I have been thinking a lot about Romans lately and so the arrival of this study help is very timely.
On a regular basis, in conversation or listening to conversations, I hear Romans referenced as an anchor. Many of our most fundamental beliefs and doctrines have been clearly articulated in this book so I guess it makes sense that it is mentioned so often. Sadly though, even given the fact that I have been involved in ministry for many years, I have never studied through this important book. I guess it is time.
I look forward to diving into this book of all books, this great manifesto of out faith. I’m certain that it will be difficult and also that it will be glorious. What better way to focus on Truth then to see it in the pages of Scripture? (Actually, is there any other way but this?) As Jesus said, “Your Word is Truth” (John 17).
“…for the sake of His Name among the nations…” Romans 1:5
To begin, I am struck by the simple line found in Paul’s opening statement. I perceive that this captures a common theme that will wind its way through this book. We have received grace, this is sure. But we have received it for the sake of His name.
Chasing down every word of this line will produce vast landscapes of the most beautiful reality…the only reality of redemption. To ponder the extent and the expense of Grace…To recognize and comprehend the way that we have received this…To be arrested by the authority and power of the Name that distributes this grace and establishes our faith…To see the mission of this Name reaching and changing the nations…We need this. We need this constantly.
Romans is not for the “Gospel” tract or for the dorm room argument. Romans is for all of us in every moment because all of us in every moment are for the sake of His name among the nations.

This message by Paul Washer, though lengthy, is worth watching. This has impacted me in so many ways I can’t even begin to unfold it. I pray that God will use it to speak to you as well.
The Ten Indictments of the Modern Church:
1. A practical denial of the sufficiency of Scripture
2. An ignorance of God
3. A failure to address man’s malady
4. An ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ
5. An ignorance of the doctrine of regeneration
6. An unbiblical gospel invitation
7. Ignorance regarding the nature of the Church
8. A lack of loving and compassionate Church discipline
9. Psychology and sociology have replaced the Scriptures with regard to the family
10. The Emergent Church , Church growth, and cultural sensitivity

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1,14
Is there any other place to begin a series that will focus on Truth. What else do we have that caries more weight in our world than the very Word of God. The Word was with God from the beginning. Indeed the Word was God. That Word, the Son of God, became flesh and dwelt among us and was in Himself the fullest display of grace and truth.
This regular Tuesday post will be a focus on Truth: the Word of God revealed through the Bible and through the Word made flesh-Jesus Christ. This first post is just to establish the foundation of such a pursuit.
I believe the Bible. I believe it because it is True…It is Truth. People may disagree with this assertion, but it wouldn’t change the reality of it. The Word of God is the standard for all things. God has given it for this purpose. The bible has been given to be the means to convict our hearts by the Holy Spirit, revealing Christ and His work on our behalf, and the main source of our sanctification as God uses His Word to continue to change, shape, and strengthen His children.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 1 Timothy 3:16-17
What we have in our hands is a great treasure. Yet, we often discard this gift to find words from other sources. The role of the preacher and teacher in many churches has moved away from being an expositor of Scripture to become an advice giver, therapist to the masses or…even worse…an entertainer.
We need to understand afresh the words of a teaching tool* for children:
How is the Word made effectual in Salvation?
The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching of the Word, an effectual means of convincing and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort, through faith, unto salvation.
What we need in this world is God. We need a knowledge of Him, a way to see His face and hear His heart. We have this in His Word…and His Word is truth.
In this weekly post, we will wrestle with some pressing issues and questions when it comes to truth. We will take the approach to always hear what God has to say in His Word as it is ready to equip us for everything.
Do you have any suggestions? What are some pressing questions that you have, that you would love to hear what God’s Word has to say in the matter?
Leave your suggestions as a Comment on this post.
